Yard Sales

This page is intended to give you tips and ideas for raising funds for trips to Disney World by having a yard sale.

I held a yard sale to raise funds for a trip to Disney World. I learned a few things along the way that I thought I’d pass on to you.

A yard sale can be a great way to

  1.  Clean out your house of items you no longer want, and
  2.  Help you raise money for your next trip.

Be warned though. It takes a bit more work than you might anticipate. After gathering everything together for the sale, there was still clean up of the items and tagging to be done. On the day of the sale, signs have to be posted, tables set up, and people start arriving even before the yard sale has officially begun. The early birds seem willing even to go through bags and boxes that haven’t been unpacked yet. Don’t try to do it all on your own, get a helper. Even better, hold it with others, especially neighbors, where you can advertise it as a Multi-Family yard sale. Be prepared to reduce your already low prices. People are looking for bargains these days. I learned quickly that if I wanted to sell an item for $3, I had to mark it for $5 and let them talk me into accepting $3. Make sure you have plenty of bags on hand for people to take home their purchases.

At the end of the sale, there are going to be items leftover. Here are some ideas for those:

  • Keep them for another yard sale at another time
  • Take away any of the more expensive items, then put up a sign that says "Fill a Bag for $1".
  • Sell the more expensive items on E-Bay or in the Want Ads.
  • Bring anything remaining to your local Good Will (or similar charitable organization). Be sure to get a receipt and you can take a deduction on your tax return if you itemize your deductions.

Some suggestions:  Advertise the yard sale in advance by putting up signs the weekend before.  Advertise in your local newspapers, church bulletin, Want Ads, etc.
